A new study shows that the over-the-counter drug Prilosec may be able to help prevent heart attacks in people who are at higher risk of getting heart attacks.
The study, by Dr Peter Stoll, of the University of Sheffield in the UK, shows that a similar drug, omeprazole, is in a class of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs).
It was first reported in 2017 that omeprazole can help patients who were at higher risk of getting heart attacks. It is also used to treat other conditions, including gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), ulcers and certain cancers.
The drug is not approved for use in the UK, so it is not expected to be a new drug. It is currently only available by prescription.
The drug's patent is set to expire on March 27, 2025. If approved, the drug could have major impact on reducing the need for heart attacks and other preventable causes.
It's not yet known what effect the drug has on other common heart diseases, such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
Prilosec, a generic version of Nexium, is the first product in its class which can be used to treat patients who are at higher risk for heart attacks, which includes people who have heart problems such as heart failure, coronary artery disease and high blood pressure.
The drug is currently only available by prescription and is not available in the UK. It could be available over the counter without a prescription in certain regions.
A trial was carried out in three European countries to test the drug's ability to reduce the risk of having heart attacks.
In the trial, people with high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, high cholesterol levels and severe heart failure were given omeprazole. They were then given Prilosec, which was taken daily for a month.
It was found that omeprazole helped patients with heart attacks to reduce their risk of having them.
However, it didn't help people who had been at higher risk of heart attacks.
The study is the first to show that omeprazole is a more effective drug than Prilosec. It was the first such drug to be approved in the UK.
Dr Peter Stoll, from the Department of Cardiology in the University of Sheffield, said: "Prilosec is a new anti-ulcer drug, which will be an important treatment option for patients with cardiovascular disease. Its ability to reduce the risk of heart attacks is exciting, but it is also a new development in the treatment of serious conditions which require long-term follow-up. This makes it an attractive option for those in high risk groups."
This review of available evidence reveals that Prilosec is not yet the best choice to use for patients at higher risk of getting heart attacks. However, recent studies have shown that Prilosec is an effective treatment option for people at risk of heart problems.
It is not yet known whether it is safe to use Prilosec in people who are at higher risk of getting heart attacks.
As of September 2023, Prilosec will be available on prescription in the UK.
If approved, it could have a major impact on reducing the need for heart attacks and other preventable causes.
Read moreIn the study, a group of patients who had been at higher risk for heart problems was given omeprazole. They were then given a placebo for the same period of time.
They were then given a small dose of omeprazole taken twice a day. They were then given Prilosec for the same period of time.
They were asked to drink water while taking omeprazole for six months. The trial showed that omeprazole helped people who had heart problems to reduce their risk of having them.
Dr Peter Stoll, of the University of Sheffield, said: "Prilosec has the potential to reduce the risk of having heart attacks by encouraging people to stay physically active for longer periods, which is beneficial in patients who may be at risk of developing heart disease.
"As the risk of heart problems and heart attacks continues to increase, it is important to have regular blood tests to monitor for any signs of heart problems.
